Top 1000 rock songs of the 90’s page published!.

I started posting at this blog in 2009. As of 2012, I began a new blog. This is from it! Please add the newer blog! I post there more now.

“I just posted for the first time online the top 1000 rock songs of the 1990′s — the golden age of alternative and the Seattle sound, with plenty of guitar rock, hard rock and even dance music thrown in for amazing variety. The list is entirely objective and based on the Tunecaster weekly charts.”

Who has the most number one songs on an album?

July 23, 2012

The answer is at the bottom! Watch this video as you scroll down.

What is an album?

An album is a full-length collection of songs released together as a package, from which, one or more songs are released as ‘singles’ promoted to become pop hits or hits in other music formats on radio or streaming sites.

Full-length traditionally means a collection of at least eight songs, typically ten. The term comes from the original album format, the 33 1/3 RPM (rounds-per-minute) 12 inch long-playing (LP) record, which could hold less than an hour of sound. This same understanding of album remained when physical formats shifted to 8-tracks, cassettes, CDs, and digital works.

For the purpose of this question, these albums must be new, original works mostly by a single act or artist, not compilations, and not bonus-sized packages. I will call these “regular albums.’
For the final answer, read through to the end.

Michael Jackson was first with five.

Michael Jackson was the first artist to have a regular album with five number one hits. In 1987, Michael Jackson released the album Bad. Here are the number ones from Bad.

I Just Can’t Stop Loving You

The Way You Make Me Feel

Man In The Mirror

Dirty Diana

All the pop charts at the time agreed, Cashbox, Tunecaster, Radio & Records, and Billboard.

Alanis Morissette ties Michael Jackson.

The debut album Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morissette was a huge blockbuster. Here are the five number one songs from this album.

Alanis Morissette Jagged Little Pill album cover

You Oughta Know

Hand In My Pocket

You Learn

Head Over Feet

Charts became quite scattered in the 1990s. None of these five songs became number one songs on Cashbox or Billboard. Two of these songs did not even make the famous 100-position charts. At Radio & Records, the first two missed number one, but the last three became number one songs. All five became number one songs on the Tunecaster Pop Top 20.

Additionally, All I Really Want received some pop airplay and peaked at number 5 on the Rock Top 20.

“If there was one time-marker that represented modern rock’s peak in popularity it was an album called Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morissette… You Oughta Know… blasted its way to the top. It became one of the biggest hits of the year and the album tied with Hootie & The Blowfish for biggest selling album of the year. Each album sold 15 million copies, which was unheard of in modern rock.” Alex Cosper, The Rise of Alternative Radio. Chapter 7.

And the winner is . . .

Katy Perry with six number one songs!

Consecutive Rock Number One Artists

July 16, 2012

It is very rare for a group to have two number one rock songs in a row–consecutive number one songs.  Here are all the consecutive number ones on the RT20 from its inception in 1979. They all took place in the super fast rocking eighties.

On October 8, 1980, AC/DC retook number one with Back In Black. The song spent three nonconsecutive weeks at number one. The next number one, on October 25, was Hells Bells.

On January 14, 1984, Van Halen song Jump hit rock number one. (Jump also hit number one pop a few weeks later, becoming  crossover number one song on both charts.)  Jump was replaced on the rock chart with Middle Of The Road by The Pretenders.  Van Halen swiftly returned to number one with the following two consecutive number one songs.

Panama by Van Halen hit rock number one on February 18, 1984, and spent two weeks at the top of the chart.

Hot For Teacher peaked at rock number one on March 3, 1984, and stayed on top for two weeks too.

The next time there were two consecutive rock number one songs by the same group was 1988.

Here is the audio to Angel Of Harlem by U2, which hit rock number one on December 10, 1988, for a single week.

When Love Comes To Town by U2 With B.B. King became the next rock number one song on December 17, 1988.

That’s all there is–Van Halen and U2!

David Lee Roth is back with Van Halen for 2012 and U2 is still going strong today.

What makes these songs unique?

June 30, 2012

How about a little quiz? What do these 105 songs, all of these songs, and no other songs, have in common? Here’s a clue: it has to do with popularity.

Answer at the bottom if the section.

1. Eagles, Heartache Tonight, 1979
2. Queen, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, 1980
